EU-Backed SOUNDCOMB+ Project: Integrated Wall-Acoustic Panel Innovation
September 26,2025
Under the EU’s Horizon 2020 program, a project called SOUNDCOMB+ (Wall‑integrated Ecologic Sound Absorbing Panel) was initiated (led by IDEE & DESIGN in Austria) to embed acoustic function directly into wall structures, creating a truly integrated wall + sound absorption solution.
Key outcomes achieved between 2018 and 2019 include:
Use of 100% sustainable materials, with the ability to render arbitrary surface prints (2D / 3D), textures, or patterns, combining acoustic performance with aesthetic flexibility.
Achieved absorption efficiency in tests exceeding 95% in assembled state, showing particularly strong mid-to-high-frequency response.
SOUNDCOMB+ is positioned as a structural building element rather than a mere functional panel detached from the structure.
Although this project remains at a prototype / validation stage, its design philosophy has valuable implications for akupanel / advanced acoustic wall panels:
Integrating absorption layers into the wall structure can save space and enable seamless design
Custom graphics, patterns, and geometries open up opportunities for product differentiation
Emphasis on high absorption efficiency, sustainability, and simplified installation represent key directions of competition
If such wall-integrated acoustic products reach industrial-scale production, they may become a benchmark in high-end interior construction.
