Ecophon Leads Ceilings4LIFE: Circular Recycling System for Acoustic Materials

September 26,2025

In July 2025, Swedish acoustic brand Ecophon (a Saint‑Gobain company) was appointed coordinator for the European LIFE project Ceilings4LIFE (C4L), with a total budget of approximately €3 million, of which €1.8 million is co-funded by the EU. The project aims to establish a fully circular value chain for acoustic ceiling and wall absorbers made of glass or rock wool, by recycling post‑consumer products without high-temperature melting, thus reducing waste and carbon emissions.

Each year, around 2.5 million tons of mineral wool waste is generated in Europe, and acoustic ceiling/wall components account for about 10%. Ecophon expects this project to enable production of 793 tons of Refiber™ baseboards per year (with high recycled content), yielding a projected annual CO₂ equivalent reduction of 714 tons.

Ecophon emphasizes its ambition to be the first net-zero acoustic solutions manufacturer, and to lead a transition in the industry toward cross‑company, value‑chain material reuse. The next phase is to build the first full-scale Refiber™ facility in Sweden and expand to the full European market in 2026.

This initiative has meaningful implications for akupanel / acoustic wall panels:

  • Higher adoption of recycled materials and improved reuse ratios will become a competitive differentiator

  • Avoiding high-energy melting routes in recycling lowers lifecycle CO₂ footprints

  • Connecting with demolition / decommissioning supply chains offers value-add in product entry

  • In green building certifications, “circular material content” can be a compelling marketing feature
